We are inviting entries for our Short Film Competition to celebrate the launch of McMuslim.tv – the new voice of Scottish Muslims.

Guidelines

  • Please try to keep entries to under 5 mins in length.
  • Try not to stray too far from the key themes of Islam and Scotland
  • There may be special prizes for exceptional entries.
  • Good luck!

Categories of Short Films

Entries must fall within at least one of the following categories:

  • Category 1: Islamic
  • Category 2: Social and Health Issues
  • Category 3: Weaving the Tartan
  • Category 4: Entertainment

Here are some ideas to start your creative juices flowing. Feel free to expand your horizons:

Islamic
  • Factual: A short video, discussion or Q&A on an interesting aspect of Islam.
  • Historical: Personal views/Documentary on an Islamic leader/historical event.
  • Educational: Instructional videos for new Muslims, How To videos for all.
Social and Health issues
  • Identity, Citizenship, Belonging in Scotland.
  • Racism, Gender inequality, Sexual issues, Bullying.
  • Social media, Drugs, Mental Health issues.
Weaving the Tartan
  • Learning from the past – Stories of the first generation, Interview your Granny?
  • Living in the present – Current affairs, Islamophobia, the Media, Role models.
  • Looking to the future – Scottish Muslims: Integrating. Contributing. Leaving?
Entertainment
  • Comedy, Mockumentary.
  • Dramas, Plays, Stories.
  • Nasheeds, Anything else (gulp!).

Age

Entries must fall within at least one of the following categories. Winner and runner-up prizes will be awarded for the best videos in each age group:

  • Under 12s
  • 12-15 years
  • 16 and above

Judges

Nuzhat Ali

Nuzhat won the Channel 4/Northumbria University Writing for Television Award at the Northern Writers’ Awards in 2015 and is currently exploring writing for theatre and TV. She is a member of the Muslim Women’s Council and has recently completed a project on the Shared Heritage of the Daughters of Eve which has culminated in a book. Nuzhat is currently running the monthly Faith Circle events which aim to raise the bar on scholarship for Muslim women. She is married with 3 children and 2 grandchildren.

Bilal Hassam
Bilal is the creative director at British Muslim TV. He is a medical doctor-turned-community activist and had the first British Muslim unscripted reality TV show ‘Being Bilal’.

Naeem Raza

Naeem is the CEO of the charity One Family and is a seasoned broadcaster and fundraiser.
